Goombah, Church Street, Brighton, 1891; Phillip Treeby.

A very curious house at 168 #ChurchStreetBrighton which I thought might have been the one made out of the gatehouse of the mad 1890s mansion Norwood that once stood on the Brighton foreshore, but no that’s a different one.

This does have very #QueenAnne #stainedglasswindows, very square patterns, and also the stairs look QueenAnne, but the exterior is plain, with unusual columns on the verandah, and it’s also symmetrical, which is not v QueenAnne, nor is that angled porch thing……

Update : its 1891 by #PhillipTreeby, architect of Norwood, so I was nearly right. Built for notable local, Dr Macansh, and called #Goombah. It’s huge too, giant lounge, 6 bedrooms and a sep 2 bed apartment upstairs as well – no wonder it sold for $3.2mill 8 years ago !

The stairhall, from real estate site
Norwood, built 1891, facing the beach near what’s now Norwood Ave, dem in 1955.
