Pellegrini’s, Bourke Street – death of Sisto Malespina

12 November 2018

Very upsetting but I thought I should go.

For those not from #Melbourne, the flowers are a tribute to Sisto Malaspina, co-owner of #Pellegrinis, who was killed by a wannabe terrorist/man with a #mentalillness, probably both, just 2 blocks away. Shocking when something like that happens to someone you know.

Used to go to Pellegrinis a lot in the late 80s with my then flat mate, we’d be greeted with ‘ciao ragazzi’, and get a creme caramel to share, which we’d demolish in a minute. And the mozzarella toast (a huge chunk of bread covered in bolognese sauce) was a great hangover breakfast. The menu never changed, still hasn’t. Loved to sit at the big table out back, watching the ladies do the cooking.

The cafe was started in 1954, and the stylish modern European shopfront was created c1955, with its neon and plateglass corner window and metal lettering signage. Only recently #heritagelisted, not including the interior, with its stools, chequerboard floor, chunky shelves, worn laminex, yellowed paint…
