The lesser seen but still impressive east face of #RipponLeaEstate, showing off that so-called #LombardicRomanesque #polychromebrick that #JosephReedArchitect introduced in the late 1860s, when the first stage of Frederick Sargood’s house was built.
I guess this house is unique for amongst so many other features for having three impressive fronts – even the back is great ! Not sure which bit was when but the tower is later, and I think the garden (south) front, and definitely the port cochere and conservatory are 1890s.

The #StainedGlassWindow over the stairs at #RipponLeaEstate; having looked more closely at windows with that Cliveden one, they’re not just pretty pictures, but depict something – this is about #dayandnight, with a sin on the left and a #hootowl in the right (swipe) – the oranges mean something too, but I’ve forgotten what! Anyway, it’s very cheery. Don’t know date or manufacturer !

The #palmhouse at #RipponLea is pretty amazing. I first saw it at some open day that my mother dragged me to in about 1980, when a bunch of #NationalTrust properties were open – for free !
This thing had palms growing through the slatted roof, quite overgrown; it’s in fine form now. Added about 1884- the Sargood’s added and expanded to the house and gardens continuously from the start in 1868 pretty much till he died in 1903. It’s actually a #shadehouse, but in future with #gobalwarming the palms might need more than shade…
