#FlindersStreetStation #tiles in the #DegravesStreetSubway all cleaned and broken ones replaced, very schmick. Second photo looks blurry but its tiles that havnt been cleaned. The new tiles are whiter, or maybe they’re old patching ? Not sure. The tiles in the toilets are more even. Very hard to exactly match old #crazedtiles. Repaired #tiling in the stairs off the platforms at #FlindersStreetStation; they were damaged in the 90s when the platforms were paved, a very bad job ! Can’t believe it’s taken this long. But glad it’s finally happening.

Very close but not exactly same – just noticed the tile repair works include new #paintedtiles in #FlindersStreetStation platform Degraves Street subway – and then I compared with a remaining original one. I’m not really complaining but on its own the new sign looks a bit odd, the O is drawn a bit thin and the middle stroke of the F not long enough – maybe they copied different tiles to one I photographed? I see the tiles are #stackbond instead of #stretcherbond, but I assume the tiles were like that before. The hand is very nice, has more shading than the original. Update : I’m told that the restoration architects @lovellchen had great trouble finding anyone to reproduce the tiles.

Repost 2017: More on the tiling repairs at Flinders Street Station. First time in my living memory (ie since the 70s) that any work has been done to properly repair these 1910 tiles, which line the subways, stairs, ramps and toilets. Love the pointing hands even if there’s no trains to St Kilda any more. Smart re-arrangement of the underpass toilets too; they swapped the men’s and ladies, since the men’s had more stalls, all preserved, while also opening up a path through to platform one. Great work from @lovellchen
