APM Power House hanging on….

The fabbo if dilapidated #APMboilerhouse (actually #powerhouse) in #Fairfield which I tried to make waves about exactly a year ago (#SaveAPM !), after the Minister overturned #HeritageVictoria’s recommendation to list it. Thought it would be gone by now to make way for yet more apartments in a development that’s going to have 2500 of them. It’s called #YarraBend. The only old bits they’re keeping is a smallish 1930s building and the 1920s powerhouse, so right now it’s a vast empty site, with the Power House built in 1954 sitting grandly alone; I especially like the very 3D arrangement of former coal chutes running up to the top. It was important as by far the most stylish industrial thing built in the postwar period; designed by Mussen Mackay Potter as a bit of a symbol for the Australian Paper Manufacturers. The glass curtain wall is also a first.
