Suburban Modern Church -Burwood Methodist 1961

Burwood Methodist Church, 1961, Alexander Harris and Associates. One of the best examples of the popular A frame applied to Modernist churches. I’d never noticed it, it was once much more of a landmark on the #BurwoodHighway as in the early photo; the #gumtrees have hidden it away from the busy intersection it once dominated. Melbournes first #KMart is across the road, both places built for car based suburbia. It’s very tall, with a blank timber front, and the huge roof broken only by some very low dormers. The curvy spire with added relay boxes is a later addition, and the original asbestos cement shingle roofing didn’t last and has been replaced by tray deck, no doubt lower maintenance, but not as smooth. Now Burwood Heights Uniting Church.

This is why the interior of the 1961 #BurwoodMethodistChurch is bathed in a pink glow – the main lighting is from this huge south window. #AlexanderHarrisAndAssociates

Looks like all original furniture inside, interesting angular timber, and a set of throne-like chairs. Note the bit of light seeping through above the cross behind the sanctuary wall, from a tiny skylight in that massive roof. Thanks Rev. Sylvia Akauolo-Tongotongo for letting a stranger taking photos go inside !
