Michaels Camera Store, a 4th generation business.

#MichaelsBuilding, cnr Lonsdale & Elizabeth, 1916, think we learned about this in architectural history classes – it’s earlyish #ReinforcedConcrete, a fave subject of Prof Miles Lewis, and allowed the extensive seemingly unsupported windows (the supports are hidden at the inside corners). Great little building. By #ArthurPurnell, a prolific architect best known for his few Chinese influenced projects.

Also just realised it’s still Michaels ! Started out as jewellery/pawnbroker by Emmanuel Michael (Jewish?), who built the building, his son got a degree and turned it into a chemist in 1928 (check out the pill add), then his chemist son expanded the camera department until it was just cameras in 1976, now his son, the 4th generation, is running it – surprisingly still going given we’ve all got cameras in our pockets now, but I guess real cameras can do more….

Update : they announced they were closing the store and going online in Jan 2021. Older photos from Michael’s website.
