A fine Gothic Revival bank

Not that many Gothic style Victorian banks, mostly for the #ESandAbank, thought all by #WilliamWardell, but no he only did the Flemish style ones, this one in #ClarendonStreetSouthMelbourne by #TerryAndOakden, built 1880; posted it last April when it was still an #ANZbank, but not any more ☹️

Update May 2021 : it’s now in the process of being redeveloped by @shebuilt.au, and all female design team, who have already refurbed the interior (revealing orig floorboards and remaining ceiling), and are going to build a little office block behind. First image Shebuilt website, next two from their Instagram.

update : 16 Jan 2023:

The new part not quite finished

In fact it paused for ages, just saw it finished 16 August 2024: Rather prominent little office building popping up behind the 1880 Gothic Revival bank in Clarendon Street South Melbourne. It was mostly built last year but seemed to pause for ages as a concrete shell (last pic). Designed by @agiusscorpo for @shebuilt.au, it’s an all female design and development project, which is nice. It’s a bit of an uncomfortable pair, since the office block is shiny and curved and graphic when the bank isn’t, but it’s pretty much left intact, so I shouldn’t complain. Nice patterns on the side, and the entrance is actually an open space between the two, with a nice ramp entry with gothic style railing.
