Anyone been in the basement here ?? It’s the fabulous #MelbourneSafeDeposit, built by the Stock Exchange Co, same time as the Exchange building, attached but separate, and also designed by #WilliamPittArchitect, very similar but not as ornate top and bottom and not in stone. Had a bay added on the left in 1923 by the #ESandAbank- before that it was a bit like a Gothic Rocket, so vertical and pointy ! And the basement vaults themselves still there ! Down that steep stair. The safe was imported from the Milner Safe Co, London, of plate iron and ‘undrillable steel’. Handed over to Guardian Vaults in 2017, many boxes emptied including a gold nugget and a sold gold cutlery set. I’d heard about it, wasn’t sure still there, but that’s it, complete with original gates and patterned floor, but don’t know if the fab carved timber and leadlight booths still there – anyone been in ?? Update : I’ve been told that yes the booths are there !
