William Wardell x 3

William Wardell x 3

Here’s something I didn’t know – our fabbo Gothic Bank had siblings ! Architect William Wardell did more work for the ES&A bank, starting with the Adelaide branch in 1883 (sadly demolished in 1965); it had very similar feel, matching first floor windows and balconettes, and a similar door, very fine. He then designed our version, much more Venetian, in 1883, completed in 1887. Meanwhile he did another bijou version in Sydney, in George Street in #therocks in 1886 that’s like a sample portion of the #GothicBank, with asymmetrical #leadlight #traceried windows below and narrow arcaded windows above, and a square mould over the door. 19C architects didn’t mind repeating themselves, but I guess many architects do. First photo Adelaide, ANZ archives, 2nd mine of Melbourne, last Sydney from Archiseek.
