Eliza Tinsley, Bourke Street, 1925

28 January 2019, updated:

The very nice 1925 Eliza Tinsley building at the end of Bourke Street is an industrial building that goes right through the block, but just the facade will be retained when the approved 67 level #RotheLowman tower goes ahead. Nice stair in the entry.

Update 2024: site sold in 2021, and seems they might be applying for a new permit, and the rules have changed a bit since then.

FunFact : Eliza Tinsley took over her husbands business in the West Midlands when he died in 1851, making her quite a rarity, and built it up into a big hardware manufacturing business – nails, chains and stuff, and it’s still going ! Photos from 2015.

The tower has gone to square gridded, but don’t know if they’re keeping more than just the facade; the only public report I’ve got is from 2017 recommending retaining 6m depth, and there’s an image of a function room that looks like it’s part of a retained room, so I can hope ! There’s a tiny walkway to Langs Lane on the right hand side, which would be widened by opening out the ground level, better for pedestrians but not the building. Found an old pic of it on Facebook.
