The refurbished #QueensHall at the #StateLibraryVictoria looks amazing, all that delicate plaster detail highlighted by pale paint, and the fabbo #fishscale #skylights reinstated; hard to believe it’s been 16 years since it closed (due to fire risk/exits), and what a change from the 1970s green and cream scheme. It now looks much as it did in a photo from 1866. Designed by Joseph Reed, it was built in 3 stages all matching (middle, south, north) and the photo shows it was mostly pale, with patterned #friezes by EJ Bateman only in the places where they’ve been revealed. The giant 70s Victorian style lights have gone, but not replaced with reproductions of the 1860s lights. This room is fondly remembered as the cosy and quiet Arts Library section from 1976 to 2003, now it’s just the chess and bridge collection, with the central space more easily emptied for functions. Restoration works by @andronasarchitecture.

Excellent! Was going to mention that there was a photograph around of the hall from much much earlier but then scrolled down and saw you had it posted (1866). What a completely fantastic result that refurbishment has given us.
