Substation architecture

Substation architecture

October 2019

The new #substation in #WaratahPlace in the city, by @co_opstudio, it’s not bad, some interest and texture, but I’m still annoyed they couldn’t do it with tiles that looked like #redbrick instead of the popular very dark brown, and that they said the half-tiles were going to be in a contrasting (red) colour, referring to the earlier Deco facade, but they’re not ! The circular windows in the side refer to it, but you hardly see them.

The arched facade is on the next lane, #HeffernanLane, and you can see the detail of the #LEDlights in the projecting bricks, which are / will do some subtle pattern, which is nice, but not necessary imho.

The rear of #InternationalCakes on Lonsdale Street revealed with the demolition of the 30s substation in #WaratahPlace for a new one. Looking very Hong Kong-ish, but actually it’s pretty intact shop/warehouses built 1891, designed by #GeorgeDeLacyEvans. Pic 2 is the hole in the ground for the new substation – power for something like 1/2 the cbd goes through here.

Update : International Cakes, opened in 1962, closed last year. There’s at least one bar upstairs though. I’m sure when I posted this before someone commented they lived there in the 80s or 90s, and there was quite a bit of carry on, late night gambling ? Can’t recall.
