Another Toorak Highrise

Another Toorak Highrise

28 October 2019

The #highriseapartments at 46 #LansellRoad are I guess early 60s and rather plain, but a huge garden setting, and of course great views. One of the many high rise blocks in #Toorak when you really look for them. They seemed to stop building them by the mid 70s though.

Update : just found an image on the wonderful resource Dictionary of Unsung Architects – they’re by Grigore Hirsch (practicing as CONARG), 1962. He was a Romanian-born architect, arriving here 1949, and was quite successful.

This is the front, they didn’t try at all really – but then it’s all about the garden.

They’re described as #gardenapartments, which means it’s set in gardens, rather park-like actually, presumably the garden belonged to the house previously on the site (update : yes it was called Homewood, a Queen Anne mansion, last owned by the Nicholas family). And the entry is like a hotel #portecochere, with some interesting stepped raised #planterbeds, about the only notable design element. Some parking at the back but I presume barely 1 space/flat.
