Wesleyan Church St Kilda, surrounded.

I’m still very annoyed about this development from the c1998 – ok, the church was abandoned and needed rescuing, but it didn’t need a shop built virtually in front- I mean the shop could have been to the right, or not at all, leaving the main diagonal view free. And maybe didn’t need to be locked away behind a fence either, it would have made a fine office rather than cut up into apartments. It’s really old too, 1859, built for the Wesleyans, designed by #CrouchAndWilson, including those great spires, not restored. I made submissions against it while at the Trust, but #heritagevictoria thought it was fine. The development designed by #WilliamsBoag, and won an RVIA urban design award in 2000.

This is part of the development designed by #WilliamsBoag around the old Wesleyan bluestone church in #FitzroyStreetStKilda in c1998; its a bit tricksy but I do like that there’s interest and variety and I’m a fan of elements overlaid and overlapping – the only thing is that at 25 years there’s stains and cracks, in particular the flat panels, probably fibre cement. I think that’s more than would be expected, but easily fixed if the body corporate is on the ball. Update 2024 : looks the same, pics 3,4.
