Victorian villas, Burnett Street St Kilda

22 August 2020:

Nice big Victorian house in #BurnettStreetStKilda with a bit more richness than usual – double height arcaded verandah, with barleycorn columns and balustrading, including under the window ledges, which have cast iron frills too. Colours a bit gaudy – they are heritage colours but the Victorians would not have painted it two different colours, they didn’t paint cement render wall, it’d be either render grey, or maybe limewash ochre, or possibly rose. Think it’s a boarding house, no sales, and that notice is ‘to all visitors’.

Another big #VictorianVilla in St Kilda, in #BurnettStreet; 1890s MMBW plans show it had a side garden where the verandah continues round, so might have had a bay view (the garden is now 60s flats), but that’s all I know. It’s probably 1880s, very typical #castironlace and fence for that decade. Might be a rooming house now since no flats sold or for rent last 10 years – all I found was a 2008 image showing verandah repairs. Needs a repaint already.

Curious house in Burnett Street #StKilda, half hiding behind a hedge. Built rather close to the street, its only single storey and no verandah. Looking at goog earth it’s big, a double block, with a carpet on the left, and has a bay windowed side on the right, facing north, so prob had a big side garden where there’s now 1920s flats. Ok, the 1873 Vardy plans show exactly that, and in fact a similar shape house is there in the Kearney 1855 plan, so could be that early, which would explain the small front garden, though also probably added to on the garden side by 1873.
