The fantastic Wesleyan Methodist Church in Sydney Road Brunswick is in the news, with neither the private owners or the Dep of Education taking responsibility for maintenance, leaving the community school that occupies it, and the equally interesting Sunday school behind, in leaking buildings. Heres my 2019 post : I reckon this is the best #polychromebrick church in Victoria, perhaps even the most #highvictorian, and one if the earliest, full of elaborate details. Designed by #TerryAndOakden and built in 1872, it’s got arches within arches, a stepped tower with a columned open belfry, an inset arched entry, and a secondary gable entry on the left, with that very cute #belvedere thing above, three colours of brick, and carved stone. Love it. Hope it gets fixed up soon. I don’t mind if it becomes offices, as long as they don’t change it too much inside, though I’ve no idea how intact it is.

Not much to look at but unusual – it’s a very grand #sundayschool, behind the 1872 #WesleyChurchBrunswick, built 1886, designed by #AlfredDunn who burst out with lots of interesting stuff in the late 1880s then died. It’s sort of semi-circular, with three classrooms poking out in three directions, with sloped floors, all facing stages in the middle (like to see a plan…). It’s a #communityschool now, but looks deserted…
