Coca Cola bottling works

Original post 31 March 2014:

Nice little Art Deco /Modernist factory in South Melbourne on the corner of Clarke & Ross Streets. It was built in 1938, with a news report noting that it was to house the manufacturing of the ‘soft drink flavour known world-wide as coca-cola’ – so clearly a new thing then, even though it had been going in the US for decades. Possibly designed by the builder W G Rothwell, who must’ve liked his architecture modern. Sales of coke after WW2 was huge and they moved out in the 50s. In 2014 it was vacant, and possibly to be demolished, but it became a gym, and just leased again last month, but sadly no heritage overlay.

Comments from 2025. Interior from lease ad. Also told that there was a matching one in North Melbourne.
