2 April 2023:
Grosvenor Mansions, William Street, Balaclava, an early-ish example of the conversion of Victorian terraces into flats from 1919. Designed by architect/ developer Howard Lawson (who went on to develop Beverley Hills South Yarra in the 30s), the work ‘increased the rental return three-fold’. I just happened to be going passed these and recognised them from a 1983 melb uni archi school report I looked at in the early 90s about early flats in Melbourne by Terry Sawyer. I’ve copied the before and after photos in that report. Looks like they still have one owner, no sales and looking a bit run down.

That’s my car! I was curious about the history of the building after moving in and couldn’t find any information. Very interesting! Thank you for writing this.
