Repost 2018: The quite mad but fabulous #CaringalFlats, a bit of 1920s European #earlymodermism, but built 1948-51 – and in the middle of tony #Toorak, normally given to Tudor mansions. Built in Tahara Road by the James Family Agency, presumably as an investment, there’s 12 flats in a low curved block, and 6 one beds stacked on top of each other (with a tiny lift) in a tower ! The whole thing is entirely #reinforcedconcrete, and all very solar, with #sunrooms and a roof deck meant to be the playground. It was designed by #JohnRivett, who really went to town, pipe railings everywhere and flying walkways….wonderful, and for some reason this is the only notable thing he ever designed. Always thought if I had to live in Toorak, then I would choose here. In the tower of course. Update : it’s been painted a rather fetching shade of pink, apparently the original colour, last photo from nevertoosmall.com.
