Original post 27 August 2017, now updated :
The #statue of #JohnBatman in the plaza of the National Mutual Building, as it was in 2015, then half hidden 2016, now gone who knows where. It was in the news today, with Ben Quilty saying it shouldn’t come back, because of his wonton murdering during the ‘black wars’ in Tasmania. The statue was by Stanley Hammond, and commissioned by the @cityofmelbourne in 1979, along with one of his rival #JohnPascoeFawkner, by Michael Mezaros. Funny, but they’re both looking down. There’s more fuss about these statues now that they’re gone than when they disappeared ! (I think they weren’t considered #goodart).
Update : the so called Collins Arch has replaced the National Mutual Building, and everyone’s forgotten about the statues, not that I’m all that fussed. First image Monument Australia, also Fawkner close up.
