The #ICIbuilding does look splendid sitting at the top of #LondsdaleStreet; with parks on two sides it manages to look #freestanding in the #Corbusian ideal, even though it’s built almost on the south and west street boundaries. Designed by BatesSmartMcCutcheon, built 1956-58, Melbourne’s first skyscraper – well over the old 132ft height limit, and Australia’s tallest (for a few years), and first postwar skyscraper to be added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 1990.

And a couple of years after it was finished, some of the dark glass panels on the end wall spontaneously shattered, showering the footpath. Protective scaffolding went up until they’d all been replaced. Turned out to be impurities in the glass and Melbourne’s hot sun and cold nights.
