Original post 22 September 2017:
Not many painted signs left in the CBD, but there’s a big one half hidden on the side of Alstons Corner (ne Eliz & Collins) – closeup thanks to @nowvoyager_ Newman’s was a jewellers, and according to the ad from 1936 I found, was started in the 1850s. An article from 1911 says they moved from Bourke Street to a new shop at 84 Elizabeth Street, having bought the ‘very old’ building (and presumably built the curious pointed Edwardian building right below – the article only talks about what was inside). It was in 1930 that they ‘removed’ to 289 Collins Street, perhaps getting more prestigious as they went. In ’34 they had a showing of the Archibald Prize, sounds important, but they don’t seem to have lasted much longer, the 1936 ad being the last mention I could find. Update : The shop seems to empty.
