This is the inside of the very fabulous 2nd Church of Christ Science, in Cookson Street Camberwell, just near the station. It was built in 1936, designed by Bates Smart McCutcheon, and is one of the very few Art Deco churches in Victoria (albeit not a traditional church). Lots of great details in the ironwork and the plaster (I’m not sure the carpets are original but they’re great too). The best bit is the geometric plaster screen behind the podium, with an organ behind it. These photos of the interior are available because it’s up for sale, I guess the Scientists are moving on. Hard to know what it could become next but it has a lot of space, with a lower hall and the main hall upstairs. A function venue ? It’s on the heritage register so it’s pretty safe.
