Retreat Hotel, beautiful and rare interior.

Original post 28 October 2016:

The Retreat Hotel Abbotsford, one of the cutest pubs around. Also possibly the only pub in Victoria with a pretty much intact Edwardian interior, and it’s beautiful. Built c1915, architects probably Sydney Smith and Ogg who did loads of pubs in this period often with corner turrets eg Victoria Inn Williamstown (last pic). The interior features loads of great tiling, polished wood and brass (note the elephants) and lead lights. The little front bar has an amazing curved counter (other people’s photos), and there’s nice panelled rooms behind. I don’t know how it was never all opened up, a very rare survivor. And yes the exterior featured as the local pub in The Sullivans, whereas the interiors were a set. Update 2023: it was sold on 2018, but fortunately nothing has changed.
