St George’s Peace Memorial Church, East Ivanhoe, Frederick Romberg, 1964

Original post 30 October 2017:

A complex that includes the church, the 1930s #churchhall, and two more levels of halls as well, arranged around a courtyard, all connected by an attenuated arcading/cloister – which extends down the other side of the church and round the back where it forms the #escapestairs. The interior is restrained, in the same warm #facebrick, with timber lined ceiling and all original furniture. The almost de Stijl canopied #pulpit is pretty special, and the glazed brick depiction of Christ is very nice too. Romberg’s 60s work is often overshadowed by his then partners Robin Boyd and Roy Grounds, but he did some great stuff. A heritage overlay, including the interior features of the church, was approved in April this year.
