14 November 2017:
Parliament Station, completed January 1983, designed by McIntyre Partnership (firm founded by #PeterMcIntyre), the second to open of the 10 year long #cityloop project. Love the bizarre but fun #column tops, full scale replicas of the #TuscanOrder columns of the front 1889 collonnade of the nearby Parliament House. The miniature classical surrounds at the platform entries are rather less successful, whereas the simple stainless steel arch over the Bourke Street stair is a good bit of historic reference while not being literal. Its really a #latemodern interior, with great mirror finish ceilings, lots of white and blue enamelled metal walls and ceilings, slim tubular lights, stainless steel framed signs, and of course those loooong escalators gliding down under an arched roof. All pretty intact, but very worn in places, and cluttered up with equipment, newer signs, vending machines etc. but really it’s held up well given it’s now just over 40 years old ! I hope it’ll be restored one day, not completely done over. I mean, it won an Architects Institute Merit Award in 1985. 2023 : havnt been down for ages, others tell me it’s still just as worn.
