A delightful fish-based Modernist church in Brighton

Original post 20 November 2017:

St Leonards Brighton, architect Bruce Kemp, 1956. Early modernist church design for Victoria, and an unusual one. It’s modern but traditional, managing to still look like a church. Almost European expressionist, but likely influenced by Coventry Cathedral, with those tall stepped plan windows (meant to be stained glass like Coventry, never eventuated); but perhaps also influenced by US church architect #BarryByrne, whose 1931 Christ the King in Cork has stepped wall/windows, and his 1949 St Francis, Kansas City, has the same plan of opposing curves (the #VesicaPiscis, the Christian fish symbol). It’s all very sculptural, especially the great inward curves of the tower. The interior is rather beautiful, lovely soft hidden lighting, large enough to be impressive but small and warm enough to be embracing. Lovely altar furniture too. And it’s locally #heritagelisted.
