The Strand, Elizabeth Street

The Strand, Elizabeth Street

Original post 8 December 2020

Great shot of a bit of #LostMelbourne; one of the once numerous tall thin buildings in the central CBD, ‘The Strand’ was on Elizabeth Street, almost next to the great #ANZRoyalBankBranch. It was built in 1929, architects #PeckAndKemter, in a Gothic skyscraper style clearly drawing on NY precedents like the Woolworth Building. Demolished in the late 70s along with everything around it and around to Collins as well, by the National Bank, who planned a tower – which the @nationaltrustvic fought against (too tall for Collins) and which fortunately didn’t happen. Instead we got a horizontal lump which some people like but I don’t. Original image from Wunderlich Catalogue via historian Graeme Butler’s excellent Flickr site, 2nd from Trove, 3rd State Library Victoria, last recent streetview.
