Hay & Corn Store, William Street

Hay & Corn Store, William Street

Original post 3 January 2021:

A rare survivor on William Street near Little Lonsdale – under the white paint is an 1855 shop. Probably #bluestone. James White’s Hay & Corn Store. Built as an attached part of the original Metropolitan Hotel, and left behind when that was rebuilt in the 20s. Pretty intact, even the shop window shape. It was just a terrace house size, perhaps he stored hay and corn in the backyard ? The MMBW plan from 1896 shows it had a short front section and a long structure stretching behind; it now has a roof going all the way back. This came up when looking through my copy of the excellent 1974 book ‘Melbourne’s Yesterday’s’, a photo book drawn from many sources, including local historical societies, the Royal Historical Society, and private collections, so many are still not in line – though this one is in the @library_vic collection, John Noone photographer, 1869.
