Striking #shophouse on #SydneyRoadBrunswick (I finally went further than my own street) – unusual detailing, a bit naive actually, with those wide slightly wonky flattened arches with vermiculation inside, when it’s normally only used in bases or keystones. Also unusual that it’s part 3 floors – perhaps whoever built it wanted a bigger house ? Or a two storey shop topped by a residence ? Or three floors of warehouse space ? A lot of unanswered questions because the Moreland heritage study doesn’t list it separately. Update : it was pointed out that it had this amazing grand stair, so obviously a two level (or even 3) shop, but apparently it was pulled out sometime after 2018.

The splendid and unusual Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in #SydneyRoadBrunswick. Great stripey #QueenAnneStyle, can’t think of another pub quite like like it, and don’t know date or architect (but must be about 1890). Has surviving (or repainted) signage in #eaudenil, and a half-hearted repro verandah, and it makes a great set piece with the setback 1920s post office next door (now Penny Black).
Update : seems that it’s 1899, designed by TA Payne, at least he advertised for painting then, rather oddly can’t find anything else or any old pics.
