South Melbourne terraces and cottages

13 January 2024:

Elegant terrace in Bank Street South Melbourne. Since there’s no parapet, and cast iron verandahs were ubiquitous by the 1870s, this could be 1860s or earlier. The fence however looks much later perhaps 1880s, with those chunky posts. Bit rusty too. Lovely gardens.

Same but slightly different- a pair of two storey timber terraces in Bank Street South Melbourne. Perhaps 1860s or 70s. South Melbourne has more attached timber terraces than other suburbs, not sure why. Real estate ad from 2013 for the left hand one show lots of original or restored features, lovely French doors to the balcony. A 2019 lease ad for the right hand one show everything opened up and painted white. Not my cup of tea.

A stroll through the bit of Raglan Street South Melbourne near Clarendon; first a very unusual house with a single level arcaded front and dormer windows, havnt seen another like it I can think of, also an off-centre door, real estate says c1872, might be, certainly altered inside, but the dormer looks original; then a more formal one perhaps similar date next door with a very wide verandah without posts; then a nice Edwardian pair, and lastly something probably 1960s with an extravagant cast iron -style fence, which makes me think poswar migrant, but I might be wrong. Update the first cottage was renovated in 2015/16, by @fooilingkhoo looks very different, and apparently the attic has internal heritage listing by @cityofportphillip, very unusual.
