State Library stairs

Original post 19 January 2020:

Here’s the very nice but controversial renovated #marblesstairs at the #StateLibraryVictoria; it seems that because each step was worn unevenly, it didn’t meet the newish National Construction Standards, nor OH&S, and rather then replace they put new (different) marble over the old, with a new regulation higher balustrade too. Quite a nice solution, but really just how dangerous can slightly worn stairs be ? Also, the foyer is disappointing, with some vague coffering but the lower parts are lower than the tops of the arched doors either side, an annoying detail. The previous (c1999) foyer was disappointing too; I don’t clearly recall the one before that except there were some great bronze revolving doors, and some simple mosaic tiles, maybe it was never terribly exciting. Altered many times, I think originally it had four columns in it. The stairs beyond were part of the 1913 addition of the domed reading room.
