28 January 2024:
Some great photos of the very interesting Rosebud Uniting Church, built in 1967, and designed by Smith & Tracey. It features a steep swooping up roof made of a pair of hyperbolic paraboloids (also known as hypar), clad in copper. Inside, there’s a lot of great timber framework, and a tall triangular window behind the altar. Hypar roofs are pretty rare in Victoria, though there’s the very pointy conc Rosebud Soundshell, also 1967, and just nearby on the foreshore (and on the VHR). So it’s pretty important, though somehow not that exciting from the street – should have been the other way round ! Originally it had a long glass walled front, with a freestanding conc block wall creating a sort of courtyard – that’s all been replaced in favour of an open glass foyer. First two photos found in History of Dromana FB page, then a series sent to me on by FB friend Oliver Nicholson who saw it open, and that some of the copper roof was being replaced, then a couple from the churches FB page, with possible original timber altar, and last one from the company that put solar panels on the roof.
