Glen Huntly Railway Station

Glen Huntly Railway Station

19 February 2024

The new Glen Huntly Railway Station, opened late last year – quite a striking and attractive thing I think, I like the use of red bricks and a huge arch, a nice solid effect, which is counter intuitive given it’s all suspended over the lines. The tram stop is integrated, more or less, and the whole thing is better than the crashing of tram tracks over rail lines. There’s a huge roof which will hopefully keep the rain off, and there is actually an enclosed waiting room for those cold winter days. The platforms themselves are in a bit of a featureless tunnel (last pic Daniel Bowen), but I suppose that’s fine, like any number of subways or metros. Doesn’t seem that there was any idea to build anything more over the tracks, though the trench has huge beams across, which look like they could have held up at least some grass ? Architects @coxarchitecture, who hope that it will be ‘a civic gathering space’…maybe not, but there are places to sit which is nice. All for only $1/2 bill ! (that includes a very long trench going under Neerim Road as well). Side note – the suburb is apparently officially Glen Huntly, but often spelled Glenhuntly, and the station used the first spelling from 1881, then the second from 1937, now back to two words.
