Unbuilt Museum

Unbuilt Museum

6 March 2024:

This rather mad thing was almost built on Southbank where the Exhibition Centre is – back in the late 80s the idea was to extend the old Exhibition Building, and relocate the Museum to here. The design, by Daryl Jackson, seen here in photos of the model held by @museumsvictoria from 1991, is full-on postmodernism, with domes, colonnades, banding and angles too. Construction was actually started, but the Kennett Government elected in 92 stopped it, and eventually decided to swap the sites, putting the museum in Carlton, and the Exhibition Centre here, both designed by @dentoncorkermarshall. The conc structure of whole front section of Daryl’s museum was built (but nothing else), which DCM retained and incorporated; it’s the bit behind and to the left if the big glass screen. The night time shot of the model I found somewhere else, and the Ex Centre shots are mine. If it had actually been built, not sure I would have liked it, a bit busy even for me ! But I’m sure I’d be defending it now.
