Original post 14 March 2019: #Terracehouses, Delbridge Street, #FitzroyNorth; Essex House, Stoneleigh House, Parkview House, and St Elmo, probably all 1880s. We call them terraces, but strictly a ‘terrace’ means a row all the same, which is much more typical in the UK or the US (where they’re called #rowhouses). Whereas in Melbourne and Sydney building them separately was a bit of thing, sometimes quite isolated from others, and sometimes they were similar but not the same, as in pics 1,2. Pic 3 is a single one in Michael Street one block away with a church on one side, and a later single storey house on the other. I do like the elaborate polychrome brick that’s particularly prevalent in the area.
