As part of the creation of the student precinct at Melbourne Uni, the raised deck around the back of the stylish 1940 Frank Tait building by Percy Everett was removed, and now it’s the focal point of the generous landscaping, which slopes down toward it. Designed by @aspectstudios, there’s lots of places to sit, and planting, and a variety of paving, but my photos somehow don’t show it well. There’s maybe too much paving on the Swanston street entry area. The entry from the north is flanked by the Arts & Culture building, with the Union Theatre etc by @lyonsarchitecture, with lots of bulging balconies, not my taste, and on the other by the Student Pavilion, by @koningeizenberg, with the Roden White Library, which I like better but it’s rather madly busy. They both have lots of external circulation and places to sit, and interact, which all sounds nice. I was there on a Sunday so not much activity. There’s more of the fawn bricks that have been used in the uni’s landscaping since the 70s.
