Migrant heritage in Richmond

Migrant heritage in Richmond

19 April 2024

A bit of ‘immigrant nostalgic’ style – Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Burnley Street Richmond. The postwar migrant communities pretty much always went for traditional styles in their churches, though rarely employing an architect, instead applying suburban building techniques to evoke churches in the home countries (in this case perhaps Byzantine era churches, but I don’t know enough to be sure). The building started out as the Church of Christ in 1910; purchased by the rapidly growing Greek Orthodox community in 1962, then 20 years later in 1984 this new front was created, in brown brick. At some point an iconostasis and frescos were added inside. There’s great wrought iron gates, sorry I didn’t get a closeup. This is the sort of place often overlooked in heritage studies because the architecture is often rather naïve, and this one isn’t listed (that I can find). Pics 3,4 Richmond and Burnley Historical Society, info from them and a post by @art_dogs_architecture_gal.
