Public Housing, Brunswick Street

Original post 28 April 2014:

Some social housing from 2012 in Brunswick Street, on the Atherton Gardens Estate – it actually sort of blends in between the trad #brunswickstreet shops and the 1960s #housingcommision blocks beyond. Designed by @birddelacoeurarchitects with @mccabe_architects doing the masterplanning, it’s visually interesting, or maybe a little too much going on. I like the tile patterns, not sure about the lime green. It replaced a ground level carpark with a 152 flats, a big shop, community hub, and even a kindergarten /childcare behind, where it goes all a bit Mondrian. Update 2024: No thought back then that the towers might go too ! If / when they do, I expect the site will be largely filled with up with 6-10 storey blocks, hopefully keeping the oval at least, a much higher density than everything around it, but I suppose less intrusive than 20 storey towers.
