A little planing dispute, but because it’s in Toorak, it made the news in The Age. The mansion on the corner of Irving Road and Grant Street was built in 1929, and was designed by George Nichterlein, a relative of the owner, flour miller TJ Noske, who soon went broke in depression and had to sell. It’s in an odd blend of Spanish and Old English, rather plain except for the Baroque pediments, but with a large garden setting. It was bought by Anna Kasman, who made a fortune from selling her Sushi Sushi chain, who now wants to put a biggish addition on the Grant Street side, which sits on top of the rather elaborate servants wing. It’s ok, but not really, it does clash with what would be left of the wing. It’s rather close to the next house, a modest 1936 Georgian design by Yuncken Freeman with an Edna Walling garden – which happens to be owned by Sarah Myer, the family matriarch, who took the case to VCAT after Council said yes. So I guess the design has changed a bit from the images in the article posted here, but I’d prefer it wasnt there. There’s a lot of room within the block, but I guess this preserves the gardens.
