German gymnastics

This cutie at 30 #LatrobeStreet has quite a varied and unusual history. First built as the Deutscher Turnverein in 1871 (facade 1874), architect #AlfredKursteiner, it was a hall for the German community for such pursuits as gymnastics and choral singing, and they’re still around as the #ClubTivoli. Seems like it was the Germans who started the whole physical fitness, going to the gym thing, see funny sketch from its opening days. Plus they had some parties, great image of a masked ball from 1881. The building was sold to the #Oddfellows in 1906, they added the top floor in 1922, then from the 60s RMIT occupied it, and in 1998 it was sold and converted to apartments. The hall itself was lost at some point, don’t think there’s anything left inside of note. Possibly the timber stair in the lobby ?
