Gold no more

Gold no more

10 May 2017:

#SleighHouse (later #EldersHouse), corner Bourke & Queen, #BatesSmartMcCutcheon, 1964, could be criticised as a design that hovers uncertainly between slick modern and decorative, but I did always secretly love the #goldmosaictiles that emphasised the verticals, which are being rendered over ! 😑 60s revival never more popular, but grey on grey clearly triumphing here. It’s otherwise notable as relatively early for solid rather than glass #curtainwall, and it managed to look free standing by having the #liftcore set back on the side. The ground floor (was, still mostly) all setback glass walls, with a pretty groovy lobby, long gone (HCSleigh were importers of #petroleumproducts, but seems that the building was also the booking office for the #DominionFarEastLine, if you wanted to sail to Asia). A sculpture a bit hidden on the wall in the setback is by Tom Bass, photo Graeme butler. Old photos @nationallibraryaus. Update : it was heritage listed in 2023. Elenberg Fraser had their offices there, but were not responsible for the colour change.
