Geelong State Offices

Geelong State Offices

20 May 2024

The State Government Offices in Geelong have just been added to the Victorian Heritage Register – I remember when the people of Geelong voted it as the most ugly building in town in the early 90s, when Brutalistm was very under appreciated. The wacky but very dramatic upside down pyramid design was by the Public Works Department, with documentation by local architects Buchan Laird & Bowden, and was completed in 1979. Harold Freeman did a great mosaic for the foyer depicting the history of Geelong, also listed. Both the building and the listing makes me happy. Pic 3 @brutalistcharm pic 4 @geelonglibraries.

For some reason I thought most people hated it or at least didn’t love it, but all the comments in Instagram in 2024 were quite positive, some even liking it when they were kids!
