23 May 2017:
Satchell House, Summerhill Road, Beaumaris, was built in 1950, making it an early entry in the emergence of the #postwar #modernist house. Looks almost #bauhaus, but in timber, or more likely influenced by US west coast architect #WilliamWurster, and pretty special IMHO. Architects #GodfreySpowersHughesMewtonandLobb (yes 5 of them); Geoffrey Mewton had done a number of very Modern houses before the war, and Godfrey had done some simple boxy timber houses back then too, so I guess that’s how this happened.
Update 2024: Demolished in 2017, so in retrospect my photo was probably just as that was starting. Pic 2 @beaumaris_modern, 3 what’s there now. @baysidecitycouncil is still yet to act to list any modernist houses, indeed have not added any heritage places for 20 years.
