2 Treasury Place

2 Treasury Place

27 May 2015:

The enormous triple-winged old Lands Department dominates the govt buildings within the #treasuryreserve on #treasuryplace. Shows how important land was. Plus I think it housed just about the whole of govt admin. Architect Michael Egan won a competition in 1859, but it was then criticised as too plain, so he jazzed it up with sections of engaged columns and a prominent portico, and it looks fine, though hard to get in one photo. Foundations were laid 1859, but it wasn’t built until 1875.

Later it housed the premiers department amongst other things, and became known prosaically as 2 Treasury Place. Almost became a hotel in the 90s, but fortunately was restored instead and now houses the Education Department.

Update 2024: they’re still there.
