Edwardian with American influence

Edwardian with American influence

16 June 2024:

Very interesting house at 38 Hotham Street, East Melbourne. Can’t find anything about it ! It’s clearly Edwardian but with unusual details, like the spindly verandah posts, on a verandah that’s just bracketed out, and an excellent asymmetrical arched entry porch. Must be by an architect who was looking at both English Queen Anne and American 1880s ‘Stick Style’ sources, with that arch looking rather Belgian Art Nouveau. Interiors from when it was sold in 2016, timber details looking rather American Queen Anne to me. 3rd pic is City of Melb 2002, the timber balustrade restored since then. Pic of arched entry via Chris & Steve on Flickr, B&W from East Melbourne Library.

Update : @jdflemington pointed me to the right place – it’s 1904, designed RM King. I know of him from the 20s and 30s when he worked with his brother as RM & MH King, some interesting but not outstanding projects – this is by far his most out of the mainstream design.
