Late Moderne in North Fitzroy

23 June 2015:

Striking block of #artdecoflats in #northfitzroy, cnr of Barkly and Pilkington Streets. Looks possibly 30s but probably 50s judging from the curly #wroughtiron balustrading (on stairs that unusually are all metal rather than concrete, and a bit rusty too). Unusual too to find this on an inner city area of mostly edwardian single storey terraces and cottages.

Update 2024: built c1950, according to the heritage study. Also, there was a tram track around this corner, connecting St George’s road trams via Holden Street to Lygon Street, so trams could swap across rather than being an actual route, installed 1926, removed 1976.
