Green House, Burnley Street Richmond

Green House, Burnley Street Richmond

10 August 2024

The slightly famous and quite delightful ‘Green House’ in Burnley Street Richmond, which is a perfectly preserved time capsule of (probably) post-war migrant upgrading of an old house, at a time when the English speaking community thought they were just too old and dingy to bother with. (Update : I was wrong, the family was Anglo, film critic Adrian Martin grew up here, and his father, now 101, did all the work over a period.) Judging from the photos I’d say it was an Edwardian timber cottage with a 1930s Spanish style verandah, modernised early 1960s with breeze block front walls, painted a fetching shade of avocado green. Inside, I’d say the front bedroom, 2nd bed, sewing room (museum worthy on its own), living room carpet and dining room chairs are all 1960s, while the kitchen and bathroom could be early 80s (actually each bit likely to be various periods). All yours for only $1.5mill. Sadly, it’s not heritage listed at all, I’ve emailed the City of Yarra, but last minute listings are rarely successful. All photos real estate listing.
