Essendon Airport

Essendon Airport

25 August 2014

Repost from 2014: Essendon Airport, lots of great old stuff still there ! First, the Area Approach Control Centre, 1950, now called the Everett Building (after the great PWD architect Percy Everett but I’m told he didn’t design it); then the Control Tower, built 1956 for the expected #melbourneolympicgames crowds, it was built of steel frame and cement sheet, meant to be temporary and still in use nearly 60 years later; Hanger 85, built during WW2 in 1944, later used by #TAA for aircraft maintenance, and now home for the Royal Flying Doctors; lastly a big factory like building, also 1944, and where where #beaufortbombers were built, as well as in Hangar 85, and both were designed by Arthur Baldwinson (famous Sydney modernist). The whole area is now called Essendon Fields, a #linfox initiative, all leased from the feds so free from pesky planning regulations ! Also can’t work out what the heritage controls might be, except that the control tower is on the National Heritage List, so just glad they’re all still there. The 1950s terminal is there too, but not much to look at.
